LUCAN, co dublin
Extending, reconfiguring & upgrading a 1960's bungalow.
This project, for a young family in Lucan, originated at a Simon Open Door consultation—a worthy initiative that the practice has supported for a number of years. A 1960’s detached bungalow with a non-compliant attic conversion, the property was in poor repair and had virtually zero insulation—this was borne out by its BER E2 rating. Architexture were tasked with rethinking the house to create a bright and airy open-plan contemporary family home with an emphasis on increased thermal comfort.
A retrofit thermal upgrade strategy was formulated and included an external wall insulation and acrylic render system. Existing floors and roof were generously insulated. High-performance double-glazed aluclad windows complete the envelope.
The layout of the house was completely altered during extensive improvement works. A new Kitchen-Dining-Living-Play space was created in an extension to the rear. Being north-facing, the challenge was to maximise daylighting into this main space. The extension takes the form of a double-pitch roof, open internally to the rafter line. A number of roof lights and extensive full-height rear glazing create a surprisingly bright space. The ceiling profile, kitchen island and extensive bespoke built-in furniture help to zone the room into its various functions. Built-in furniture has been used extensively throughout the project to ensure the resulting spaces would cope with everything modern family life will throw at them.
A muted colour palette was selected for the interior consisting of varying tones of grey—greys work well in the particular intensity of daylight we receive in Ireland. The colour selection creates a warm neutral background and was used as a device to unify the interior spaces & built-in furniture. The clients loose furniture and all the detritus of modern life will provide the colour and life to make this project a home.
A very happy family are now enjoying their warm, efficient and bright new home.
